Smoke Alarm Installation In Cardiff

Interlinked, Mains Powered And Certificated

We fit interlinked detection for homeowners and landlords across Cardiff, wired so one alarm triggers the lot. Heat detection goes in the kitchen rather than smoke, because an alarm that sounds every time somebody makes toast gets taken down inside a fortnight and never goes back up.

Our smoke alarm services include:

  • Mains interlinked smoke alarm installation
  • Kitchen heat detector installation
  • Carbon monoxide detector installation
  • Grade D and Grade F systems to BS 5839
  • Landlord and rented property compliance
  • HMO and shared housing detection
  • End of life alarm replacement
  • Wireless interlinking where cabling is difficult
  • Alarm testing and certification
  • Fitted alongside EICR visits

Everything is tested on completion, and you get certification for your records.

What Welsh Landlords Must Have

Renting Homes Act Requirements

Since the Renting Homes legislation came into force in Wales, a rented property must have working smoke alarms and, where there is a fuel-burning appliance, a working carbon monoxide detector. This is separate from the 5-yearly electrical inspection duty, and both apply.

In practice, that means mains-powered interlinked alarms rather than the battery units that used to be acceptable, sited on every storey along the escape route. Where the property is shared or licensed, there will usually be more required on top, coming out of the fire risk assessment.

What we see going wrong is alarms that exist but are not interlinked, or a heat detector fitted in a kitchen with no smoke cover in the hall, or units well past their 10-year replacement date. All three fail an inspection.

We install, test and certify, and we can do it in the same visit as an EICR so the tenant is only disturbed once. Rules do change, so check the current position with Rent Smart Wales if anything looks borderline.

Where Alarms Should Go

Smoke, Heat And Carbon Monoxide

Getting the type right matters as much as the count. Smoke detection belongs on escape routes, so the hallway and every landing. A smoke alarm in a kitchen will be triggered by cooking, taken down within a fortnight and never put back, which is why kitchens get heat detection instead.

Carbon monoxide is a different thing again. It detects a gas you cannot smell, so it goes near the appliance producing it, a boiler, a gas fire or a solid fuel stove, rather than by the door.

In older Cardiff terraces the practical problem is cabling. Running interlink cable through a three-storey converted house without lifting every floor takes some thought, and where it genuinely cannot be done we use wireless interlinking between mains-powered units, which achieves the same result.

Alarms have a service life of around 10 years, whatever their condition, and we will tell you if what is up there is simply time-expired rather than faulty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Smoke Alarm FAQs

Do rented properties in Wales need mains smoke alarms?

Rented homes must have working smoke alarms, and in practice that means mains powered interlinked units rather than battery ones, with carbon monoxide detection where there is a fuel burning appliance.

Why does my kitchen need a heat detector instead?

Because a smoke alarm in a kitchen goes off every time somebody cooks, gets taken down and never goes back up. Heat detection responds to fire without being triggered by toast.

How often should smoke alarms be replaced?

Around every ten years, regardless of whether they still test. The sensors degrade over time, so an alarm that beeps when you press it can still be past its useful life.

Can alarms be interlinked without cabling?

Yes. Where running an interlink cable through an older property is not practical, we use mains-powered alarms with wireless interlinking, which achieves the same result.
