How Long Does Wiring Last In A House?

How Long Does Wiring Last In A House

A common question we often get asked before or after completing a house rewire is how long the wiring will last. The short answer is approximately 25 years, but some modern wiring can remain serviceable for up to 40 to 50 years.

To walk you through everything you need to know about the durability of your house’s wiring, we walk you through how long you can expect your wiring to hold up, signs that it might need attention, and why keeping an eye on it is essential for your home’s safety and efficiency.

How Long Does Electrical Wiring Last?

The wiring in your house isn’t meant to last forever, and it’ll eventually require rewiring. Although wiring can be serviceable for up to 40 to 50 years, you’ll want to completely rewire your home every 25 years or sooner if you experience any faults (as discussed below).

This is due to safety concerns regarding the degradation of the materials used in the wiring (i.e. the insulation and conductors can deteriorate over time).

As well as safety, as a qualified electrician, we must comply with the latest building codes and regulations. This means that if we were to carry out work at your property, the wiring must be up to standard in the first place.

What Are Signs That Your House Has Old Wiring?

We can often tell when a house is overdue for an electrical rewire straightaway. For example, if your wiring is encased in black rubber, fabric or lead, this means that your wiring is easily older than 50 years old.

Other signs include cast iron switches (these are still found today in very old properties), a wooden backing present on the consumer unit or lack of labelling (meaning a replacement consumer unit is also required), a lack of plug sockets in each room, and so on.

Symptoms of Faulty Wiring

Old house wiring will eventually cause issues to occur, and common faults that you may experience include the following:

  • The consumer unit frequently trips, and fuses or bulbs blow often
  • Electrical sockets emit crackling or buzzing noises
  • There is evidence of burning, such as discolouration around plugs or a burning odour
  • Lights flicker persistently, requiring frequent bulb replacements
  • Sockets show signs of damage, such as being broken or cracked
  • Plugs become excessively hot during use

If you ever need to rectify these faults as soon as they become apparent, we offer emergency callouts in Cardiff, where we can fix any issues.

How Can You Test It?

If you want to check for faulty wiring in your house, such as an earth leakage or a short circuit, we would always recommend giving us a call. Electrical testing is a lot more than simply checking that your appliances turn on and off at the plug socket.

With that being said, if you want to perform some basic checks, using an appropriate socket tester to test for faults such as reversed polarity or a weak earth connection is certainly doable.

However, we must stress that a professional is best for a more comprehensive test. For example, our experience and expertise mean that we can quickly detect hidden issues and ensure compliance with the latest safety standards. We can also offer further inspections (i.e. PAT testing) and be able to offer effective solutions too.

Final Words

If you are ever in doubt about the safety of your ageing house wiring, it’s highly recommended that you have it inspected regularly by an electrician.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry, and diagnosing issues early on can often result in quicker and more cost-effective repairs.

If you have any house wiring questions, contact our team, and we will try to help wherever possible. As a team of experienced electricians based in Cardiff, we’ve certainly seen all sorts of house wiring (good and bad), and there really isn’t anything we haven’t seen before.
