Electrical Fault Finding Cardiff
Tripping breakers and intermittent faults traced circuit by circuit until there is nowhere left for it to hide, including the ones already looked at twice.

Electrical Fault Finding In Cardiff
Located Properly, Then Repaired
At Assured Electricians, we find the cause rather than swapping parts until something changes, which is why a lot of our fault work is on installations somebody else has already been to. Most faults are repaired on the same visit once we know where they are, and the circuit is tested before it goes back into use.
Our fault finding services include:
- RCD and circuit breaker tripping faults
- Intermittent fault investigation
- Loss of power to a circuit or room
- Flickering and dimming light diagnosis
- Earth leakage and insulation testing
- Water ingress and damp related faults
- Buried cable tracing and repair
- Faults following building or plumbing work
- Landlord and letting agent call outs
- Commercial and industrial fault finding
If the fault only shows up in wet weather or at certain times, tell us, and we will come back while it is happening.
Got A Fault Nobody Can Find?
One tripping circuit or a fault across a whole building, no job is too big or too small for our electricians.
Fault Finding Across Cardiff & Nearby
Cardiff based, so we can come back and catch an intermittent fault while it is actually happening.
We trace faults across the whole city and out into the Vale.
Concrete built flats with buried cabling and older houses carrying years of alterations are very different problems, and both need testing rather than guesswork.

Why RCDs Trip
What Is Usually Behind It
An RCD trips because current is going somewhere other than back down the neutral, and it does not much care whether that is a failing appliance or a nail through a cable. That is why the first job is separating the two.
Appliances are the most common cause by a distance. Kettles, washing machines, immersion heaters and older fridges develop small leakage as their heating elements age. Individually, none of them is enough to trip anything. Add them together on one RCD and the total gets there, which is why the trip happens in the evening when everything is on at once.
The next most common is water. Outside sockets, garden lighting, and shower pull cords in bathrooms all let moisture in eventually, and a damp circuit will trip after rain and behave perfectly in a dry week. That is the classic intermittent fault.
Where a board has one RCD covering half the house, a single fault takes out everything on it. Splitting the circuits onto individual RCBOs during a board replacement means the next fault only affects one circuit.
Faults After Other Work
Builders, Plumbers And Buried Cable
A large share of the faults we trace appeared straight after somebody else worked in the property. New kitchen, new bathroom, a wall taken out, a shower fitted. Cable gets nicked by a plasterboard screw or a floorboard nail, and the fault turns up days or weeks later rather than immediately.
Those are worth finding properly, because a cable that has been damaged but is still working is a fault waiting for the right conditions. We can trace cable routes and locate damage without opening the whole wall.
Water damage is the other big one. A leak upstairs finds its way into a ceiling rose or a downlight, and the circuit behaves oddly long before anything visibly fails.
Where the fault turns out to be a symptom of an installation that has had enough, we will tell you plainly. Repeated faults across several circuits usually mean the whole thing wants testing before more money goes into patching it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our Fault Finding FAQs
Why does my breaker keep tripping with nothing plugged in?
Usually because the fault is in the fixed wiring rather than an appliance, often moisture in an outside circuit or a damaged cable. That needs testing circuit by circuit to locate.
How long does fault finding take?
It varies, which is why it is priced as its own job. A straightforward fault can be found in under an hour. An intermittent one may need a return visit while it is happening.
Can you find a fault another electrician missed?
Often, yes, and it is a lot of what we do. Faults get missed when parts are swapped instead of the installation being tested circuit by circuit properly.
Will you repair the fault as well as find it?
Yes, and most are repaired on the same visit once located. Where a part or more access is needed we make it safe and come back to finish.
