Sizing A Shower Circuit
Why You Cannot Always Fit A Bigger Unit
Electric showers are sold by kilowatt rating, and a higher rating means a hotter shower at a decent flow. It also means a great deal more current, and that is where the trouble starts.
Moving up from a modest unit to a powerful one can push the current draw beyond what the existing cable was installed to carry. The cable then has to be replaced, not just the breaker, and on a first floor bathroom that means getting a new run from the board through the house.
The board matters too. A shower circuit needs a spare way and adequate protection, and plenty of older Cardiff boards have neither. Where that is the case the board comes first and the shower follows.
Supply capacity is the last consideration. On a property with an older or shared supply, a large shower running alongside an oven and an EV charger needs thinking about rather than assuming.
Replacing An Existing Shower
What We Check Before Fitting
A straight replacement of the same rating is usually a short job. We isolate, remove the old unit, check the cable and connections behind it, fit the new one and test the circuit including the RCD before it goes back into use.
What we always check is what is behind the old shower, because that is where problems hide. Connections that have been running warm, cable that has been extended with a joint inside the casing, and the odd unit fitted with no earth continuity at all. None of it is visible until the cover comes off.
If you have already bought a shower and it is a higher rating than the old one, tell us before we come out and we will tell you honestly whether the existing supply will take it. That saves a wasted visit and an awkward conversation.
Where the shower keeps tripping the breaker rather than failing outright, that is a fault to trace rather than a reason to replace the unit.

Can I fit a more powerful shower on the existing wiring?
Often not. A higher rating draws considerably more current, and the cable may need replacing rather than just the breaker. Tell us the rating and we will check before coming out.
Does an electric shower need its own circuit?
Yes, a dedicated circuit from the board with RCD protection and an isolator you can reach without standing in the shower. It cannot share a circuit with anything else.
Is fitting an electric shower notifiable?
A new circuit is notifiable under Part P, so we certificate and notify it. A like for like replacement on an existing sound circuit is not.
Why does my shower trip the breaker?
Usually a failing element letting current to earth, though it can be the cable or connections. It needs testing to tell which, rather than replacing the shower and hoping.
