Bathroom Electrical Work In Cardiff

Right Fittings, Right Zones, First Time

Every position in a bathroom sits in a zone, and each zone limits what can go there and to what protection rating. We pick the fittings against that before anything is bought, which matters because a light that is fine over the door is not necessarily allowed over the shower.

Our bathroom electrical services include:

  • Bathroom downlights and ceiling lighting
  • Mirror lighting and illuminated cabinets
  • Extractor fan installation
  • Shaver sockets and shaver points
  • Electric towel rail supplies
  • Underfloor heating supplies and controls
  • Electric shower circuits
  • Supplementary bonding where required
  • Pull cord switch installation and repair
  • Full bathroom rewires during renovation

We come in at first fix before boarding, because everything is behind tile afterwards.

Planning A New Bathroom?

A single shaver socket or a full bathroom rewire, no job is too big or too small for our electricians.

Bathroom Electrics Across Cardiff & Nearby

Cardiff based, so we can fit around your bathroom fitter without holding up the tiling.

We work on bathrooms across the whole city and out into the Vale.

Bathrooms in rear extensions often have no window at all, which changes what the extraction has to do and where the fittings are allowed to go.

Bathroom Zones Explained

What Can Go Where

The zones are simpler than they sound. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray itself, and almost nothing can go there. Zone 1 is directly above it up to a set height, which is where shower lights and some fans sit and where a high protection rating is needed. Zone 2 extends out from the bath and shower and above a basin, where the requirement eases slightly. Beyond that, the ordinary rules apply, with sensible caution.

What this means practically is that a downlight that is fine over the doorway is not necessarily acceptable over the shower, and a fitting sold as suitable for bathrooms may only be rated for the outer zones.

Socket outlets are not permitted in a bathroom other than a shaver supply unit, and even that has to be positioned clear of the wet zones. That is the rule people are most surprised by.

Older Cardiff bathrooms often also need supplementary bonding depending on the existing installation, and whether that is required comes out of testing rather than assumption.

Bathroom Renovations

Getting The Electrics In Before The Tiles

Bathroom electrics are the cheapest thing in the room to get right and the most expensive to change afterwards, because everything is behind tile and boarding.

We come in at first fix before boarding and tiling, with the positions agreed against the actual layout. Where the mirror goes, whether there is a shaver socket, whether the towel rail is switched or on its own supply, and where the fan is going to draw from all get settled then rather than later.

Underfloor heating is the one that most often gets missed. The mat goes down before the floor, the supply and thermostat have to be planned in, and retrofitting it means lifting a new floor.

We work directly for homeowners and alongside bathroom fitters and builders across Cardiff, fitting into whatever programme the job is running to. If the same visit can pick up other repairs in the house, we will do that while we are there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Bathroom Electrical FAQs

Can I have a socket in my bathroom?

No, other than a shaver supply unit positioned clear of the wet zones. It is the rule people are most surprised by, and it applies no matter how large the bathroom is.

What are bathroom zones?

Areas are measured out from the bath and shower, each setting a minimum protection rating for anything installed there. They decide which fittings can go where.

Is bathroom electrical work notifiable?

New circuits in a bathroom are notifiable under Part P, so we certify and notify them. Replacing a like for like fitting on an existing circuit is not.

When should the electrician come during a bathroom fit?

Before boarding and tiling for first fix, then again once the room is finished. Everything is behind tile afterwards, so positions have to be agreed early.
